‘Poorest of poor’ in Carcar City benefit from socialized housing project

NINETY-FIVE families considered to be the “poorest of the poor” in Barangay Ocaña, Carcar City in southern Cebu will benefit from the socialized housing project being implemented with the help of the Kalambuan sa Dakbayan (KD) Foundation Incorporated.

On Thursday, November 24, 2022, KD Foundation president Jose Daluz III said they chose to help residents of Carcar City, particularly Ocaña, since the land there is still cheap.

He said members of the homeowners association have also been united in trying to find decent housing for more than a decade, which is why they called the project Panaghiusa Village.

Randolph Librando of the Social Housing Finance Corporation (SHFC) said qualified members of the Sun Communities 1 Homeowners Association can avail themselves of loans of up to P580,000.

Usually, the loan is payable in 25 years with an annual interest of six percent, but they lowered the interest to two percent and extended the payment period to 35 years, he said.

The Sun Communities Development Corporation (SCDC), the project’s contractor, will build 95 two-story units with a land area of 32 square meters on a 6,000-square-meter property under the Community Mortgage Program.

The first 30 units will be completed in the latter part in 2023, while another 30 units are expected to be finished in 2025. The remaining 35 units will be completed in 2025.

Daluz said the Panaghiusa Village will serve as a template for other projects of the KD Foundation, which is collaborating with the SHFC, the Carcar City Government, the Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor, the SCDC and the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development.

He said the foundation and the SCDC are looking at a 1.2-hectare property in Carcar City as a possible site for another socialized housing project if their pilot project in Barangay Ocaña proves to be successful. (PAC, PJB)
