Preparations for barangay, SK elections start in Cebu

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) Cebu Province has started preparing for the upcoming barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections scheduled in December this year.

Lawyer Jerome Brillantes, acting Cebu provincial elections supervisor, said they are gearing for the scheduled elections regardless of whether it will push through or not.

“In place naman tanan ang amoang procedure ang amoang activities,” said Brillantes.

He said the voter registration will happen in the first week of July and the public may check in their respective local electoral offices whether their status is still active or not.

The acting elections supervisor said those 14 years old who will turn 15 prior or on December 5 elections can already register themselves, so they can vote in the SK elections.

Registration may end by October or November this year.

Brillantes said they might also conduct offsite registration in different barangays, citing they are being proactive to avoid being blamed by voters should they fail to register.

“We always find ways at their own comfort nga marehistro sila,” he said, adding that they have also enough vote registration machines (VRMs).

Brillantes also said that the number of precincts that will be used in the upcoming barangay elections may be reduced compared to the recently concluded national and local elections.

“In every barangay election, kay manual naman ni siya, so medyo dili na gyud pareha kadaghan atong last election,” he said.

Should the barangay and SK elections push through, Brillantes said candidates may be given about 15 days to campaign.
