President Duterte accepts poll chief’s resignation effective immediately

Former Comelec Chief Andres Bautista

MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte has accepted the resignation of Comelec Chief Andres Bautista effective immediately.

This is contrary to Bautista’s earlier announcement that he will step down from his post by the end of the year.

In a press conference, Bautista said Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea sent a letter accepting his resignation effective immediately.

He added that he respects the decision of the President.

Meanwhile, in a text message Monday night, Committee on Justice chairman Rep. Reynaldo Umali said they will still proceed to the scheduled hearing Tuesday to write the articles of impeachment against Bautista until they receive the confirmation from Malacañang.

“We have not received official word from Malacañang. Cannot decide to cancel hearing based on hearsay,”  said Umali in a text message from the House. – UNTV News & Rescue
