Pro-Marcos vloggers have formed a lobby group in a bid to join the Malacañang Press Corps, as media observers warned that such a move could jeopardize independent coverage of the presidency, according to Rappler.

The United Vloggers and Influencers of the Philippines (UVIP) is seeking accreditation with the Securities and Exchange Commission. It is also formalizing its constitution, by-laws, and code of ethics.

SEC accreditation and organizational principles are among the requirements for accreditation by the Malacañang Press Corps.

The move comes as incoming press secretary Trixie Cruz Angeles is evaluating the rules of accreditation for influencers, which were crafted under the Duterte administration.

As of Monday (June 20), the UVIP has around 30 vloggers and influencers with a combined subscriber base of at least 2.3 million. This exceeds the subscriber count of most individual Philippine media outlets.

Incoming president Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr's only visible occupation before being elected was as a YouTube vlogger.

In the recently released Digital News Report 2022, Yvonne T. Chua of the University of the Philippines noted that country was "awash with disinformation" in the lead-up to the elections. Such disinformation mostly lionized Marcos and demonized Robredo.

The report also noted that the Philippines is one of three countries where political misinformation (64 per cent) is more widely seen than unproven claims about the coronavirus (61 per cent).
