Proposed resolution asking Ez Mil to change lyrics deferred

THE Lapu-Lapu City Council deferred the passage of the proposed resolution asking rapper Ez Mil to change his lyrics that mentioned the Filipino hero the city is named after.

Reason for the deferment

The author of the resolution, City Councilor Jan Vincent de la Serna, requested City Council presiding officer Vice Mayor Celedonio Sitoy during their special session on Tuesday, Feb. 9, to defer the proposed resolution because he will further study the rap song.

The proposed resolution, “Resolution condemning the lyrics of the song Panalo by Ez Mil and requesting the latter for the rectification of the condemned lyrics and to issue a public apology addressed to the Oponganons,” will be taken up in their next regular session on Feb 18.

There will be no scheduled regular session on Feb 11.

About the song

Ez Mil released his single “Panalo” in July 2020.

He rapped the song on Jan. 29, 2021 on the Wish USA Bus. To date, the video of his performance gained 30.8 million views on Youtube.

Part of the lyrics that mentioned Lapu-Lapu is written and rapped as “nanalo na ako nung mula pa na pinugutan si Lapu sa Mactan at lahat ang nasaktan na nalaman nila na pinatay ang kanilang bayani sa karagatan ng bansa na pag-aari ng Pilipino.”

Historically inaccurate

In a statement, the Lapu-Lapu City Government said that “the proposed resolution states that the lyrics are historically inaccurate, if not demeaning and besmirching the name of our national hero, not to mention the fact that we are to celebrate the 500th victory of the Battle of Mactan.”

In April 1521, Lapu-Lapu and his warriors overpowered and defeated Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan who was killed in battle. (SunStar Cebu/With PR)
