Puffer fish kills 1, downs 7 others in Olango

ONE of the eight family members who were admitted to a hospital in Olango Island in Lapu-Lapu City after eating a puffer fish, locally known as "buriring," died on Wednesday, August 3, 2022.

The victim was identified as 57-year-old Rosana Evardo from Sitio Sidlakan in Caubian Island, Lapu-Lapu City.

Dr. Joel Semblante, chief of Sta. Rosa Community Hospital, told SunStar Cebu that Evardo was declared dead on arrival when she was rushed to the hospital around 12:55 p.m. of August 3.

In a separate interview, Dr. Eris Augusto, attending physician of the family, said that the family members, which include Evardo’s husband, sons and grandchildren, arrived at the hospital around 4:45 p.m.

Augusto said the other members of the family, though, are in stable condition but are still closely monitored as of Thursday afternoon, August 4.

He said hydration was done and medications were given to the victims for their fast recovery.

Augusto said the family knew that puffer fish is poisonous, but it was not their first time to eat such kind of fish.

"Sayop lang daw pagkaluto sa iyaha anak, and ang mama ang nakakaon sa bihod, so mao na grabehan," he added.

Samblante said the family's means of living is fishing, which is common in Caubian Island.

He said the puffer fish was caught by Evardo's son and was eaten by them around 9 a.m. for breakfast.

He also noted that about two to three years ago, a family from Panganan Island in Lapu-Lapu City was also admitted to a hospital after eating the poisonous fish.

With this, Samblante and Augusto advised the general public to refrain from eating puffer fish to avoid poisoning.

"Kon ganahan nga mokaon, ipa-prepare lang gyud sa sakto nga pag preparer sa kamao nga mo preparar," said Samblante.

"And if ever makakaon og puffer fish and naa gipamati sa lawas, muadto jud sa doctor para matambalan dayun," Augusto added. (MKG)
