Quijano: Canelo Alvarez is on a mission

·2 min read

Just one fight ago, Canelo Alvarez was the sport’s flagship fighter. He had dismantled Caleb Plant at the Super middleweight division and had collected all the belts to be won at the 168lb. limit.

He truly was the sport’s apex predator.

But even Great White sharks are susceptible to biting off more than they could chew and the bigger, stronger Dmiti Bivol thwarted Canelo’s second attempt at becoming a champion in the highest division he could fight in—the light heavyweight.

GGG. So for now all roads lead to a familiar foe, one that most pundits will agree totally matches up quite well with Canelo and will bring out the best in him owing to their history.

Since their second fight back in 2018, Gennady Golovkin has remained undefeated, stopping three out of four opponents.

Of course, the caliber of the competition pales in comparison to Canelo’s, but that is not to say that GGG (Golovkin) has been slacking.

In the latest press conference to promote their third fight, Alvarez referred to GGG’s opponents as “Class D fighters.” He looked angry and determined and made no apologies about how he felt towards his arch-nemesis.

In stark contrast, Golovkin appeared cool, collected and businesslike.

Twenty-four rounds between them and yet nobody can tell who is clearly the better fighter.

I can’t wait till September 17 for the fireworks display that is sure to be unveiled on top of the ring. This time around, I am picking Canelo big-time.

The first two fights, I thought he was quite wary of GGG’s power. But now that he has fought at the super middleweight and light heavyweight divisions multiple times, I think he can handle his rival’s strength much better.

UFC 276. We have a stacked card today for UFC 276. Israel Adesanya headlines against Jared Cannonier while Max Holloway fights Alex Volkanovski at the co-main event. A fight to watch out for in the undercard is Fil-Am Robbie Lawler vs. Bryan Barberena.

Cannonier has a very good stand-up game and should match up well against the lightning-quick Adesanya.

It’s not every day where you get to see “The Killa Gorilla” vs. “The Last Stylebender.” Sounds like the title to a new Avengers movie.

LAST ROUND. It’s on my brilliant and always impeccably dressed colleague in the law office, Atty. M.E. Zosa who recently celebrated his birthday. Cheers !
