THE Cebu Quincentennial Hotel, built by the Duros Group in collaboration with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cebu, held its soft opening on Monday, June 20, 2022.

Located at 23 Minore Park, Cardinal Rosales Ave. corner Pope John Paul II Ave. in Cebu City, it is the first ever hotel with a faith-centered theme, the Cebuano business conglomerate said in a statement.

Cebu Quincentennial Hotel (CQH) is the Duros Group’s offering to commemorate the 500th year celebration of the introduction of Christianity in the country held amid the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic from April 4, 2021 to April 24, 2022.

It is a repository of memorabilia from the once-in-a-lifetime celebration of 500 Years of Christianity (500 YOC) in Cebu, which is considered the “Cradle of Christianity in Asia.”

Spouses Rafaelito and Fe Barino are behind the Duros Group, which began its partnership with the archdiocese years earlier when it built the P500 million International Eucharistic Congress (IEC) Pavilion at the former St. John XXIII Minore Seminary (now the 23 Minore Park) at no cost to the archdiocese, to host the 51st International Eucharistic Congress in January 2016.

In December 2016, when the IEC Pavilion was renamed IEC Convention Center of Cebu or IC3 for its transformation into a full-fledged convention center, Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma explained that Duros was running the operations of the center so it could recover its investment in the construction of the IEC Pavilion.

“This is totally ours (Archdiocese of Cebu). But in terms of operations, we asked the help of other people (Duros Land Properties Inc.). To put it plainly, they built the convention center and turned it over to us. In the meantime, they can use the piece of land in 25 years,” Palma said.

23 Minore Park also hosts Landers Superstore, a chapel, and now the hotel.

CQH has 42 rooms with three room categories: Deluxe Queen, Deluxe Twin and Deluxe Queen Corner Room.

All rooms have elements of the 500 YOC celebration including a Jubilee Cross, photographs of the events and jubilee celebrations taken by Fr. Bonnin Olivar, a Cebuano edition of the Holy Bible entitled “Bag-ong Kasabotan, San Pedro Calungsod Edisyon Bible,” and hand-painted excerpts of a poem written by renowned Cebuano poet Simeon P. Dumdum Jr.

Photographs along the hallways feature Cebu’s oldest churches and the charitable works of the Catholic Church in Cebu and the Duros Group.

Msgr. Agustin V. Ancajas provided the concept and the hotel’s interior design that speak of the journey of faith — from the First Baptism in Cebu to Magellan’s gift of the Sto. Niño image to Queen Juana, its subsequent loss and recovery to the spread of Christianity throughout the Philippine archipelago.

The hotel’s main dining outlet as well as its function rooms will open in the third quarter of 2022, while family rooms will also be available by yearend.

Adrian Gallares, head of Hotels for Duros Hotels Inc., aims to get a three-star hotel rating for CQH once it becomes fully operational.

Duros Hotels is the hotel/hospitality arm and the newest addition to Duros Group. CQH is its first hotel venture in Cebu. (PR)
