In discovering, casting and launching the next child wonder of television, the eyes of the child actor are very important.
In the past four years, Dreamscape Entertainment Television has already introduced two child wonders: Zaijan Jaranilla on “May Bukas Pa” in 2009, and Xyriel Manabat on “100 Days to Heaven” in 2011.
While searching for a new child actor, Biboy Arboleda, AdProm Head of Dreamscape, said it was five-year-old’s Raikko Mateo’s eyes that landed him the lead role on their latest primetime series “Honesto,” which opens on (Monday) October 28, after “TV Patrol.”
“Ang proseso po sa pagpili ay hindi naman ganun kahirap… I think there were four children nang nag-casting call kami. Hindi naman naging rigid ang audition kasi nga we were dealing with children. When I saw Raikko, when I saw the screen test, I fell in love already with his eyes. ’Pag mag-zero-in kayo sa mga mata ng batang ito, it holds a lot of innocence and promise,” said Biboy.
Zaijan and Xyriel also met the same critieria. Biboy even referred to the Air Supply song “The Eyes Of A Child” as the simplest explanation why the eyes of a child actor are vital: “In the eyes of a child there is joy, there is laughter, there is hope,” part of its lyrics goes.
Raikko may still exhibit rawness as a child actor, but this isn’t a problem for “Honesto” director Jerry Sineneng. The child actor actually underwent acting workshop and guidance under Star Magic.
“So when we got to the actual taping doon sa set, medyo okay na... Ang maganda sa bata ’yung attitude, napakabait, nakikinig. By nature masayahin siya, bubbly. Well, natural naman sa mga bata ’yung span of attention niya maiksi, pero kakaiba ’yung batang ito. ’Pag tinawag mo na, nasa ’yo na agad ang attention niya. ’Saka honest siya umarte,” Jerry related.
“Honesto” is a dream come true for Raikko because he has always wanted to see himself on television.
His co-stars in the series are Paulo Avelino, Maricar Reyes, Eddie Garcia, Janice de Belen, Angel Aquino, Nonie Buencamino, Joel Torre, Melissa Ricks and Joseph Marco.
As obvious as the title, Dreamscape and ABS-CBN’s simple message and virtue in “Honesto” is the importance of honesty in every Filipinos’ lives!

Beauty Queen On The Rise
Bicol has produced some of the country’s international beauty queens.
Who can forget Miriam Quiambao when she won first runner-up in the 1999 Miss Universe beauty pageant in Trinidad and Tobago? There’s also Ma. Venus Raj, who placed 4th runner-up in the same beauty contest held in Las Vegas in 2010.
In 2005, Precious Lara Quigaman won the country’s fourth Miss International title. Other beauties from Bicolandia who successfully competed abroad include Dianne Necio (2011), and the late Melody Gersbach (2009) who both placed in the semis for the same international competition.
A rising beauty queen from Bicol who is following in the footsteps of our successful beauties is Monica D. Belgica, a 20-year-old stunner from Albay. She stands 5’7, weighs 52 kilos and measures 32-25-36.
Belgica’s resume as hometown beauty queen is impressive. So far, she has earned three beauty titles since she started joining beauty pageants: Miss Sexy Body 2011 at Embarcadero de Legazpi; Mutya ng Bacacay 2011 and Face of the Year 2012.
Belgica, no relation to the political clan in Manila, also won first runner-up in the 2012 Miss Sorsogon Bikini and 2012 Mutya ng Tabak; second runner-up 2012 Magayon Bikini Fashionistas; and 4th runner-up 2012 Mutya ng Karagumoy.
The Bicolana beauty has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from San Jose Community College. And while she prepares for her ultimate dream, which is to join national pageants, she tries to make both ends meet by joining fashion shows. She underwent training at the Albay Pageant Academy, the country’s first school for beauty queens, where she was a full scholar. Later, she took part in the academy-produced fashion shows in 2012 and 2013.
Belgica is the youngest of the three children of Evelyn, an employee at a private firm in Makati City; and Zoilo, tricycle driver.
Recently, she joined Showtime’s “Kalokalike’’ segment as “Venus Raj.” She lost to a Michael Jackson impersonator but said she enjoyed the experience.
