THE Rain or Shine Elasto Painters proved steadier down the stretch as they swung the upset axe on the reigning champions San Miguel Beermen, 87-83, in the PBA Philippine Cup on Tuesday, October 13, 2020, at the Angeles University Foundation Sports Arena & Cultural Center in Pampanga.
Up by 13 early in the fourth, Rain or Shine suddenly found themselves in a dogfight as their lead was sliced down to just three, 81-78, after a three-pointer by San Miguel big man Moala Tautuaa, with just 58 seconds to go.
Another triple, this time by Beermen guard Terrence Romeo, pulled San Miguel to within a matchstick, 82-81, time down to just 27 seconds. However, Rain or Shine held their ground and pushed their lead back to four, 85-81, thanks to a triple by Rey Nambatac.
A deuce by Romeo trimmed the deficit to two, but Rain or Shine sealed the victory with two free-throws by Javee Mocon.
It was fitting that Mocon would be the one to secure the win for the Elasto Painters as it was game-long accuracy that proved to be the biggest reason for their victory. He finished with 25 points, six rebounds and two assists.
Kris Rosales added 15 off the bench while Beau Belga chipped in 12 markers to help Rain or Shine get its first win in the Philippine Cup.
San Miguel, which dropped to 1-1, was led by the 20 points of Marcio Lassiter. Alex Cabagnot fired in 18 while Tautuaa filled the stat sheet up with 17 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.
