Recent college graduate killed in Toledo road mishap

A MAN died after his motorcycle was struck by a pickup truck on the national road in Sitio Kabulihan, Barangay Ilihan, Toledo City on Tuesday afternoon, November 8, 2022.

The victim was identified as 22-year-old Jan Demale Cañeda, a resident of Sitio Planta, Barangay Poblacion in the same city.

Cañeda recently graduated from college.

The driver of the pickup truck was identified as 58-year-old Eduardo Bendanillo Ponting, a resident of Barangay Tubod in the same city.

The pickup truck is owned by Cebu III Electric Cooperative Inc.

Chief Master Sergeant Jun Ian Alqueza, investigator of the Toledo City Police Station, said Cañeda was on his way home after buying computer parts in Cebu City when the accident happened around 3:30 p.m.

Ponting, for his part, told police they were in the area to fix an electric line. He was backing up the pickup truck when it hit the victim’s motorcycle.

Cañeda was thrown upon impact. He suffered severe head injuries despite wearing a helmet.

He was rushed to the nearest hospital where he died an hour later.

Meanwhile, Alqueza said Cañeda’s family and the electric utility company have come to a settlement after the latter agreed to shoulder the victim’s funeral expenses. (GPL, PJB)
