FOR the first time in the last five days, the Cebu City Health Department (CHD) reported more recoveries than new cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) in a day.
As of Monday, June 22, 2020, CHD reported 37 new cases of infection and one additional death, both the lowest in a five-day period, as well as 42 new laboratory-negative results, the second highest in the same period.
These brought the total case count in Cebu City to 4,449, of which 2,221 are active.
The 42 new recoveries increased the total number of laboratory-negative patients to 2,146 while the additional mortality raised the death toll to 82.
The 37 new Covid-19 cases came from Barangays Basak San Nicolas (three); Luz (one); Bulacao (two); Calamba (two); Camputhaw (two); Capitol Site (two); Cogon Pardo (one); Cogon Ramos (three); Duljo (two); Guadalupe (nine); Hipodromo (two); Inayawan (one); Labangon (six); and Lahug (one).
The new laboratory-negative or recoveries are from Barangays Duljo (one); Guadalupe (one); Kalubihan (one); Labangon (33); and Tisa (six).
One death was recorded in Barangay Mambaling. The patient died on June 1.
New cases in Cebu City ranged from 48 to 126 from June 18 to 21 while recoveries were 12 to 65 for the same period.
In Cebu Province, Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia announced 435 active Covid-19 cases on Monday.
Of the number, 121 cases were symptomatic and 199 were asymptomatic. Only 115 were hospitalized.
Also on Monday, Garcia said 157 individuals have recovered from Covid-19 while 49 persons have died.
Nationwide, the Department of Health (DOH) reported more than 400 fresh cases in a day for the fifth consecutive day.
As of 4 p.m. Monday, June 22, the DOH listed 467 fresh cases and 163 late cases, or a total of 630 additional cases.
These brought the coronavirus case count in the Philippines to 30,682.
Fresh cases refer to those test results that were released in the last three days while late cases refer to those that were released at least four days ago.
The DOH reported 481 fresh cases and 81 late cases on June 18, 460 fresh cases and 201 late cases on June 19, 578 fresh cases and 365 late cases on June 20, and 415 fresh cases and 238 late cases on June 21.
These show that total infections have been increasing by more than 600 a day for four days now.
The DOH also reported eight additional mortalities that raised the death toll in the country from coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) to 1,177.
An additional 250 recoveries brought the total number of patients who have recovered from the disease to 8,143.
Among the 467 fresh cases, 164 are from Central Visayas, 149 from the National Capital Region and 153 from other regions. One is a repatriate.
Of the 163 late cases, 25 are from NCR, 93 from Central Visayas and 45 from other regions.
As of June 21, more than 8.7 million people worldwide have been infected with the novel coronavirus, or Sars-CoV-2, according to the World Health Organization. Of the total, 461,715 had died from Covid-19. (JJL, ANV, MVI)
