THE number of active coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases in Central Visayas has once again passed the 1,000 mark, as the region logged 91 new cases Friday, Jan. 8, 2021.

As of Friday, the region had 1,009 active Covid-19 cases.

Dr. Mary Jean Loreche, Department of Health (DOH) 7 spokesperson, said the numbers are reflective of the public’s movement and crowding that happened during the Misa de Gallo or dawn masses and the Christmas and New Year holidays.

“Our active cases, if comparing to that of the pre-Christmas to what we are having now, have risen more than a hundred percent,” she said in a text message to SunStar Cebu on Saturday, Jan. 9.

“For data seen Dec. 23, total active cases were only 578, whereas data last night we hit more than a thousand,” she said.

Loreche said there is a possibility that the number of cases will further rise in the following days.

Based on the Jan. 7 data of the DOH 7,603 of the active cases are in isolation while 348 are confined in hospital.

As of Friday, Negros Oriental had the highest number of active cases at 479, followed by Cebu City at 277, Cebu Province at 128, Mandaue City at 51, Lapu-Lapu City at 48, Bohol at 22 and Siquijor at four.

Loreche had called on the public not to drop their guard against the disease so as not to waste the agency’s efforts in containing the pandemic.

As long as the public remains vigilant and follows the prescribed health protocol, Loreche said she is optimistic that the region’s cases will not reach the numbers of June and July 2020. (WBS)
