THE reigning UAAP MVP of the men’s basketball tournament, Soulemane Chabi-Yo, has decided to forgo his final year of eligibility for the University of Santo Tomas (UST) and head to Spain where he will play for a Division 4 team.

The official publication of UST—The Varsitarian—reported the stunning development, where it was revealed that the Covid-19 pandemic played a huge role in the Beninese’ decision to leave the Growling Tigers.

“My plan was to finish my playing years in UST before leaving, but since Covid came, that destroyed all the plans,” Chabi-Yo said in the article.

“I hope you guys will understand me. Thank you all and thanks to the UST community for the love and support. I wish all the best to the team and also good luck for the upcoming season.”

Chabi-Yo was a force to be reckoned with in UAAP Season 82 where he averaged 17.4 points, 14.3 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 0.8 blocks and 0.7 steals per game, and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. He led UST to the finals where they were beaten by the Ateneo Blue Eagles.
