THE destruction of portions of 70 houses made of concrete and wood in Barangays Tinago and Tejero in Cebu City has started as these structures violate the three-meter easement along Lahug River.
City Councilor Jerry Guardo, chairman of the committee on infrastructure, said there were owners who volunteered to tear down the parts of their houses that encroached on the river.
The Cebu City Government enforces the clearing of the river from obstructions so the flood control projects of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 7 will push through.
According to Guardo, some house owners sought the assistance of the personnel from the Prevention Restoration Order Beautification Enhancement (Probe) team to destroy the concrete structures.
Guardo said the clearing operations will take two weeks to complete.
Lahug River, which serves as the natural boundary between Tejero and Tinago, will be widened and deepened by the DPWH 7 so it will not cause heavy flooding during a downpour. (PAC / KAL)
