Popular mobile battle royale title PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds Mobile (PUBG) Mobile announced on Tuesday (2 November) a landmark partnership with League of Legends (LoL) developer Riot Games to bring characters, items, and locations from Arcane, the upcoming LoL animated series on Netflix, into PUBG Mobile.
PUBG Mobile's Arcane-themed additions will begin releasing in 16 November as part of its Version 1.7 update, with the intention of "giving fans unique new experiences in one of Riot’s first partnerships to bring the world of League of Legends to more players worldwide".
Riot Games recently announced a month-long celebration event for the launch of Arcane, called the RiotX Arcane event.
The event will see in-person and digital cross-media events that evolve with each act of the series throughout its month-long duration.
RiotX Arcane will be celebrated in LoL as well as its auxiliary titles; the game's mobile port LoL: Wild Rift, digital card game Legends of Runeterra, and auto-battler Teamfight Tactics. The event is even crossing over to VALORANT, Riot's standalone first-person shooter.
While it may be strange for some to see that a Riot product is being featured in a game by another developer, it is worth noting that both PUBG Mobile and LoL are published by Chinese conglomerate Tencent.
“We’re extremely excited to be partnering with Riot Games to celebrate its first ever League of Legends animated series. Runeterra is one of the most beloved universes in gaming, and to be able to bring that magic to PUBG Mobile while also supporting the release of Arcane is an amazing opportunity,” Vincent Wang, Head of PUBG Mobile Publishing at Tencent Games said in a press release.
“PUBG Mobile is a beloved game that has been embraced by players around the world. We value partners that nurture communities of shared play with a deep commitment to developing exciting new content to delight players. We look forward to bringing an authentic celebration of Arcane to Erangel,” added Brandon Miao, Cross-Product Experiences and Partnerships Lead, Riot Experience (XP) at Riot Games.
