Television networks ABS-CBN and GMA released their Christmas station IDs over the weekend, which gave them the opportunity to outdo each other during the season usually celebrated with generosity and love.
These station IDs are done each year without fail and are used to showcase each network’s prized talents. However, it’s also a chance for their fans to post harsh comments about their respective rivals.
Showing love to everyone this Christmas season? These fans just don’t care, man.
If you haven’t watched it, GMA’s station ID titled Ipadama Ang Puso ng Pasko (“Show the Heart of Christmas”) showcases different non-profit organizations which help improve the lives of Filipinos.
Starring big-name celebrities such as Marian Rivera, her husband Dingdong Dantes, Maine Mendoza, and Alden Richards, it also showed their stars singing the ID’s theme song in different parts of the country.
It’s currently the top trending video on YouTube Philippines and has been viewed more than 1 million times. Watch it to see what the fuss is all about:
On the other hand, their rival ABS-CBN’s ID is titled Family Is Love and features 400 stars including Coco Martin, Jericho Rosales, and Piolo Pascual.
The video looked like it was shot in one of their gigantic studios.
It features the story of three soldier brothers who fought during the Battle of Marawi; a woman who took several jobs so she could finish school; the survivors of the landslide in Benguet; and Margielyn Didal, the professional skateboarder who rose from poverty to snag a gold medal at this year’s Asian Games in Indonesia.
Watch this if you haven’t seen it. It has earned more than 1.2 million views so far.
As expected, both networks’ fans have been leaving gushing comments online about how their favorite TV station’s ID is amazing — and how the rival network’s ID is damn terrible.
Commenting on ABS-CBN’s YouTube account, someone threw shade at GMA 7’s station ID.
He said: “You can see that everyone in ABS-CBN treat each other like family. They don’t want to go to different locations because they already did it for the past [few] years. ABS-CBN is the best at doing a CSID (Christmas station ID), proven & tested.”
Meanwhile, someone — probably an ABS-CBN fan — posted a scathing comment on GMA’s Facebook account.
Jayzel Obias wrote: “Their (GMA) concept looks familiar. It looks like it has been done before by ABS, especially the sound of the bells that is always used in the CSID of [ABS-CBN] 2.”
One GMA fan, however, said she didn’t like ABS-CBN’s ID.
Edith Perce commented on their Facebook account: “I just watched GMA’s [ID]. ABS-CBN had nothing on them. It’s obvious that ABS-CBN’s was done on a tight budget. GMA’s [ID] was superior. It’s just my comment. Don’t get pissed.”
A certain Piyaw Aquino alluded to President Rodrigo Duterte’s threat that he would not renew ABS-CBN’s franchise.
Commenting on GMA’s Facebook account, he said: “It’s not about how much stars you have. [In ABS-CBN] they have a lot of stars but most of them are just for show. And in 2020 Digong [Duterte] won’t renew their license, you’ll just look stupid.”
Yup, he doesn’t seem to be feeling the Christmas spirit much.
In the Philippines, television networks have their own fans. They could be very vocal online and even toxic.
Singer Regine Velasquez, for example, received intense backlash last month when she left GMA for ABS-CBN.
