Rovers send Appleton packing

Blackburn Rovers have sacked their third manager this season after showing Michael Appleton the door on Tuesday, after only two months in charge at Ewood Park.

Appleton joined Rovers from Blackpool at the turn of the year, but after winning just four of his 15 games in charge, while also suffering a FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Millwall, the 37-year old was sent packing by the Championship strugglers.

A statement on the club's official website read: "Blackburn Rovers FC can confirm that Michael Appleton has been relieved of his duties as manager along with assistant manager Ashley Westwood, first team coach Darren Moore and head of senior recruitment Luke Dowling."

Blackburn are currently 18th in the standings, four points above the relegation zone and in real danger of suffering the drop after failing to win any of their last eight matches in all competitions.

Appleton follows in a long line of Rovers bosses this season, with Steve Kean and Henning Berg having been given the axe, while Eric Black and Bowyer made it five managers in total, having both stepped aside from their respective caretaker roles.
