Sabillo hopes to end losing streak in fight vs. ex-champ

MERLITO Sabillo will take on Japanese Sho Kimura in a fight of former world champions on Feb. 15, 2020 in Manila.

The 35-year-old Sabillo looks to end his recent slump and possibly break into the world rankings with a win over Kimura, who’s ranked in the top 10 in both the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and the World Boxing Association (WBA).

Sabillo, the former WBO champion lost his last three contests against one-time world title challenger Edward Heno, world-rated Jing Xiang and WBO light flyweight No. 1 contender Daniel Valladares.

Sabillo, however, is on a nine-month layoff after losing a seventh round technical knockout to Valladares in April of 2019.

The 31-year-old Kimura is also coming off a long layoff after losing a unanimous decision to Carlos Cañizales in a WBA light flyweight title fight in May 2019.

Kimura is a former WBO flywieight titleholder. He won the belt by beating Chinese star Zou Shiming in 2017. He defended his belt with wins over fellow Japanese Toshiyuki Igarashi and Pinoy Froilan Saludar before losing his belt to compatriot Kosei Tanaka.

Sabillo, a former ALA Boy, is 27-7-1 with 13 knockouts, while Kimura is 18-3-2 with 11 knockouts. (EKA)
