There you are, Samsung Galaxy Note Edge. We finally meet again.
The smartphone that grabbed us by our imaginary balls at the 2014 IFA in Berlin is finally going on sale in the Philippines on February 21 for P43,990. And only 1,000 units will be rolling out to stores nationwide.
For a while there, we weren't sure that Samsung Electronics Philippines would bring the handset to the country. On the sidelines of the Galaxy Alpha launch in December, we asked the company's local executives if they would make the Note Edge available locally. They said they might not; after all, the phone's $900 (about P40,200) price in the U.S. is right up there with the 64GB Apple iPhone 6 Plus' SRP. In short, the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge will make most Filipinos' wallets cry.
Glad to know they've decided otherwise. The smartphone was on our "10 gadgets we wish we could buy in the Philippines" list. It's essentially a Samsung Galaxy Note 4—with a twist: The right side of the AMOLED screen is curved to display notifications and information pulled from select apps.
To jog your memory, here are the specs of the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge:
* Fingerprint scanner; heart-rate monitor
* 2.7GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 CPU
* Adreno 420 GPU
* 3GB RAM
* Up to 64GB internal storage
* microSD card slot
* 5.6-inch AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 (1,600 x 2,560 resolution)
* 16-megapixel rear camera with LED flash
* 3.7-megapixel front camera
* 3,000mAh battery
* Android KitKat 4.4.4
Interested? You can preorder a unit from Samsung Experience shops until February 15. According to the company, each purchase comes with the following freebies: a flip cover worth P1,499; an extended warranty that covers two years; and content and services including one season pass to any available TV series on Seasons; bookings for three rides from GrabTaxi; and five complimentary passes to a special movie bundle from Blink.
Before you make any decisions, though, keep in mind that the Korean company's next flagship phone, the Samsung Galaxy S6, will reportedly have a version with a curved display, much like the Note Edge. The worldwide launch of the S6 is slated for March 1, 2015.
