The San Miguel Beermen has traded one-time Most Valuable Player winner Arwind Santos to the NorthPort Batang Pier for veteran forward Vic Manuel.
The stunning development means the 40-year-old will finally bid goodbye to the Beermen, of which he has been a key part of since joining the team in 2009. He was part of the Beermen’s vaunted “Death 5,” which helped spur the team to nine championships including five straight titles in the Philippine Cup.
He was also the last player to win the MVP award back in 2013 before his teammate, June Mar Fajardo, won the last six MVP trophies. Santos also captured two Finals MVP awards—one in the 2011 Governors’ Cup and another in the 2015 Philippine Cup.
Still a wily veteran at age 40, Santos averaged 12.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks in the 2021 Philippine Cup where they reached the semifinals but got ousted by eventual champions, TNT Tropang Giga.
On the other hand, the trade means Manuel will not get to suit up for NorthPort after he was traded there from Phoenix for Sean Anthony, Sean Manganti and a 2021 second-round pick just a few days ago.
The 34-year old posted averages of 12.8 points and 5.3 boards for Phoenix during the 2021 Philippine Cup. (JNP)
