Sarah Paulson is the star of Ratched, American Horror Story and Ocean's 8 - to name a few - and clearly, she's an icon. Holland Taylor of Legally Blonde, The L Word and Hollywood fame, is also very much an icon. So, the fact that they are coming up on six years together as the ultimate power couple is really happy news.
Here's a complete timeline of Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor's relationship, with the most recent update first.
January 2021: Paulson posts an emotional tribute to Holland in honour of her 78th birthday. Alongside a black and white picture of Holland she wrote:
"All roads lead me to this face, those eyes, that soul. You are, quite simply- everything to me. Here’s looking at you, kid. Today. Tomorrow. Always. (If you don’t like this picture, you are an idiot, so don’t get mad when you see it. I even made it black and white since you prefer it. So shhhhhh. It’s a perfect picture of a perfect person) HAPPY BIRTHDAY DARLING."
Here's the rest of Holland and Sarah's relationship timeline...
2005: Paulson and Taylor apparently met at a dinner party in 2005, although they were both in relationships with other people at the time so nothing came of it. In a later interview in 2016 Paulson told the New York Times about the event, saying that Taylor was "probably the most exquisitely beautiful woman" she'd ever seen.
2015: Ten years after they first met, Paulson and Taylor end up following each other on Twitter, at which point Holland expertly slid into her DMs. During a 2019 episode of What Happens Live with Andy Cohen Paulson explained how they began talking, saying, "We sort of breezed by one another, and then started following each other on Twitter, and then," before fellow guest Billy Eichner interrupted; "Holland Taylor slid into your DMs?"
To which she responded, "she actually did... Yeah, it's pretty great."
November 2015: During an interview with the radio station WNYC, Taylor spoke about being in a relationship with a younger woman, but withheld Paulson's.
She told the show, "There's a very big age difference between us which I'm sure shocks a lot of people, and it startles me. But as they say, 'If she dies, she dies'."
Later that month she posted a picture of Paulson to her Twitter leading fans to think Paulson was the girlfriend she referenced during the radio interview.
January 2016: The couple make their red carpet debut at the Critic's Choice Awards in 2016 and featured in a series of happy pictures with Regina King. That's more BDE in one snap than we know how to handle.
March 2016: In an interview with NYT Paulson confirms the relationship and explains why she has always felt reluctant to label her sexuality.
"If my life choices had to be predicated based on what was expected of me from a community on either side, that’s going to make me feel really straitjacketed, and I don’t want to feel that. What I can say absolutely is that I am in love, and that person happens to be Holland Taylor."
September 2016: In 2016 Paulson picked up an Emmy for outstanding lead actress for her role as Marcia Clark in The People Vs O.J. Simpson. During her acceptance speech she gave a shout out to Taylor, saying "Hi, Holland - Holland Taylor, if you're watching, I love you."
Quickly Taylor responds with a enthusiastic tweet:
If I'm watching...?? If I'm WATCHING???
YES, I'm watching--!!!
good LORD! ...
I LOVE you!!! pic.twitter.com/63341mz81C

January 2017: Taylor opens up about her relationship with Paulson during an interview on Sirius XM, calling it a "wonderful love."
"I'm the luckiest person in the world," she began. "I can't talk about my life today and not mention this wonderful love. [The relationship] has to be part of what is the most wonderful thing in my life. The whole embrace of this wonderful relationship, which makes everything else makes sense."
January 2018: In an interview with Town & Country Paulson discusses the 32-year age difference between herself and Taylor.
"I do not want to be defined by who I share my bed, my home, my soul with," she explained. "My choices in life have been unconventional, and that's my business. But I do want to live responsibly and truthfully without hiding. It’s complicated, because there is a lot of hate in this world, and a lot of good can come from quote-unquote normalising something for people who don’t see it as normal. Our relationship represents a certain amount of hope and risk. Maybe there’s something brave in it. Maybe it encourages others to make brave choices. What else can I say? We love each other."
January 2019: The happy couple rang in the new year together with some equally happy light-up hats.
January 2020: Speaking to Us Weekly, Taylor calls Paulson "brave" to be in their relationship, adding, "she's at the center of my life."
"I’m surprised by Sarah. I mean, that we love each other and respond to each other this way is not the surprise, but that she would make a commitment like this and that she would share her life with me is a constant surprise every day really."
"A big age span is a challenge to any relationship, and she’s just very brave," she added. "She's very brave and she is very truthful and she's going to live her truth. And so I basically am following her lead and I’m blessed. I’m blessed to have the life I have right now, which no one could’ve predicted in 1,000 years. But she’s obviously at the center of my life."
