THE Sarangani Marlins escaped with a 77-73 win over Valenzuela in the opening match of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) Season 4 on Monday at the Batangas City Coliseum.

Yvan Ludovice came up clutch, sinking a short jumper with 31.9 seconds remaining to put the Marlins in front by three, 76-73. Sarangani’s defense then held steady, foiling Valenzuela’s attempts to tie the match.

Ludovice led the way for Sarangani with 24 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Krystoffe Jimenez—a popular basketball figure due to his exploits with Mavs Phenomenal—had an excellent pro debut with 22 points, seven rebounds, four assists and a steal.

Valenzuela got 15 points from Jaymar Gimpayan while Patrick Cabahug was held down to just 10 points on 4-of-18 shooting from the field.

The second game saw the Batangas City Embassy Chill rout the Imus City Bandera, 76-56. (JNP)
