A 42-YEAR-OLD sari-sari store owner was shot dead by a motorcycle-riding gunman in a public market of Barangay Talangnan, Madridejos, northern Cebu on Thursday night, May 5, 2022.

Local police identified the victim as Lendel Layos, a resident of Barangay Tugas, in the same town.

Staff Sergeant Gigi Villegas, the investigator on the case, said Layos was drinking with his friend, identified only as Darwin, near his sari-sari store when they decided to call it a day at around 7:52 p.m.

Darwin told police that after they drank, Layos went to his motorcycle.

A few minutes later, Darwin suddenly heard Layos screaming for help.

Darwin immediately ran to Layos and found the victim near his motorcycle, clutching on his chest. Darwin said he saw a gunshot wound on Layos's lower chest.

Darwin immediately brought Layos to the Madridejos Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) for medical assistance.

Emergency responders brought Layos to the Bantayan District Hospital but he eventually died at the facility's intensive care unit at around 9:04 p.m.

Local police found an empty shell coming from a .45 caliber pistol at the crime scene.

Darwin recalled that while he brought Layos to MDRRMO, the victim said that an unidentified man onboard a motorcycle shot him.

Based on their follow-up investigation, Villegas said that Layos' murder may have been related to allegations that he had cheated his wife with another woman.

Rafael Layos, the victim's brother, told police that his brother's wife recently confessed to him that she had an argument with her husband concerning his alleged mistress.

But Villegas said they will still need to verify the matter with the victim's wife.

Aside from interviewing potential witnesses, Villegas added that they are also asking establishments near the crime scene, especially those with CCTV cameras, to cooperate with them in their investigation. (GDC)
