SAMAHANG Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Al Panlilio disclosed that they are looking to select “five to six players” in the upcoming special Gilas draft that would be held during the 2021 PBA Rookie Draft on March 14.

In an appearance on the online forum of the Philippines Sportswriters Association (PSA), the SBP chief said that national team coaches have already taken a look at the list of pro aspirants and have already begun the evaluation process.

“My commitment is to share the list with Comm. Willie (Marcial), and I just have to finalize it maybe in the next couple of days, just to make sure we are ready to submit that list of names to the PBA,” he added.

Players that would be picked in the special draft would be on loan to the national team but the PBA team that selected them would retain their rights. This would be the second special draft following one held in 2019 wherein former Cesafi MVP Rey Anthony Suerte was picked by Blackwater before being loaned to the Gilas cadet squad.

The SBP has a loaded pool of players to choose from, which includes Cebuano forward Leonard “Santi” Santillan and Gilas cadets Calvin Oftana, Jaydee Tungcab and Will Navarro. (JNP)
