School division superintendents may approve request for F2F graduation

SCHOOL division superintendents in Central Visayas were given the discretion on whether to allow public schools to conduct face-to-face graduation this school year.

Salustiano Jimenez, director of the Department of Education in Central Visayas (DepEd 7), told SunStar Cebu that he gave the discretion to the superintendents as his office could no longer cater to all the applications.

“I give the discretion to the superintendents kay tungod sa kadaghan sa public schools, dili na maato kon ari pa sa atoa. Anyway, ang atoang public schools, once they already have the safety seal, gamay nalang maoy tan-awonon sa atoang division offices,” said Jimenez.

The regional director said his office only caters to and grants applications from private schools as endorsed by the division superintendents.

Central Visayas has about 3,000 public schools in 20 divisions, while there are about 1,000 private schools.

Jimenez, however, could not yet give the exact number of schools whose request to conduct the physical graduation was granted. He said, though, that he has been attending some moving-up ceremonies in private schools since April this year.

He said schools will be allowed to conduct the physical graduation provided that they have complied with the requirements set by the Department of Health (DOH) and the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF).

There should also be concurrence from the concerned local government unit (LGU), barangays, and parent-teacher association (PTA) resolution.

More than 75 percent or 3,653 schools in Central Visayas were already given safety seals or go signals to start the implementation of the limited face-to-face classes as of May 27, 2022.

He said less than 200 of these were private schools.

Jimenez earlier said that simulation or dry runs of the limited face-to-face classes have been conducted in most of the schools in the region that were granted safety seals in preparation for the next school year 2022-2023, which is expected to open in August.

But the regional director said they may still implement the limited face-to-face classes by the first quarter of the next school year. (MKG)
