Science park to rise in Zamboanga

Zamboanga City plans to build a P22.44 million science park as part of its effort to support and promote science education in the youth. The science centrum will be built on a 1,828-square-meter lot inside the Jardin Maria Clara at Pasonanca Park, close to the city museum and the butterfly garden. It’s expected to house around 56 exhibits and experiments like a pedal generator, a Van de Graff generator, Bernoulli blower, and many more.

Mayor Celso Lobregat said the proposed science park project came about after the Science Centrum exhibits of the Science-Fun Caravan Travelling Exhibition at the Don Pablo Lorenzo Memorial High School gymnasium sometime last January."The exhibits captured my interest and attention and so I thought of coming up with a facility in the city for the conduct of such exhibits where students can learn about science," he said.

This will be the first science park initiated by a local government unit in Mindanao and the third of its kind in the Philippines. The first science park was built in Naga City, under the initiative of the late DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo. The second one was built in La union under the administration of former mayor Mary Jane Ortega.

Ground breaking ceremony for the park happened last November 4, with Mayor Lobregat, Vice Mayor Cesar Iturralde, Philippine Foundation for Science and Technology executive director May Pagsinohin, local government official and local DepEd officials in attendance. — TJD, GMA News
