The Philippines Under-22 football team had no answers as they were completely outclassed by their counterparts from Indonesia in their second Group B SEA Games match on Thursday (17 August), losing 3-0 at the Shah Alam Stadium.
Goals from Septian David, Muhammad Hargianto and Saddil Ramdani secured the points for Indonesia, who now have four points from their opening two matches.
The defeat is a huge blow to the Philippines’ hopes of earning their first appearance in the knockout rounds at the SEA Games. Coach Marlon Maro had previously told Yahoo News Philippines that he was targeting a spot in the semi-finals for his side, and that he was looking for three wins from their first three games.
Indonesia pile on the pressure
Indonesia did not waste any time in the match, getting onto the scoresheet within the first seven minutes of the game. A pinpoint cross from right-back Putu Gede found David, who fired into the net.
The Garuda kept the pressure on and the Philippines could not muster up a response. Indonesia’s lead was doubled in the first-half stoppage time after a well-worked move saw Ramdani setting up Hargianto for an easy finish inside the box.
The Philippines side adopted a more defensive style in hopes of hitting the Indonesians on the break, but it was their opponents who ended up scoring again in the 59th minute. This time, it was a superb effort from Saddil, who struck from 20 yards out to add the gloss to the scoreline.
With the defeat, the young Azkals now sit in fourth place in Group B with three points. They will face Vietnam on Sunday at the Shah Alam Stadium in a match they cannot afford to lose if they hope to progress to the tournament’s next stage.
