Senators welcome Cabinet performance audit

Manila, Philippines -- Senators yesterday welcomed the plan of President Benigno S. Aquino III to conduct a quarterly review of the performance of his Cabinet officials.

The plan was disclosed by Department of Budget and Management (DBM) Secretary Florencio "Butch" Abad in a televised interview, saying the President made the announcement during a Cabinet meeting last week.

He said the review is in line with the Aquino government's policy of rewarding state agencies that performed well.

Sen. Gregorio Honasan II said he is giving the plan a "thumbs up" and that all government officials and Cabinet officers should welcome a performance audit.

"Let us all unite and coordinate and do it," said Honasan, an opposition senator, in a text message.

Sen. Francis Escudero said he is pleased with the proposal that would help the President gauge the performance of his Cabinet members.

"PNoy (President Aquino) is very hardworking. It's only right that his Cabinet men are equally or even more hardworking," Escudero said.

"After all they all serve at the pleasure of the President," he said.

Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, however, said the performance audit should have been done earlier in Aquino's term.

"Although I believe this should have been done at the start of his term, it's better late than never," Trillanes said.

"But the question is, will he actually fire the delinquent or non-performing cabinet members?" Trillanes said.
