A 74-YEAR-OLD woman was shot dead by her neighbor inside her house in Sitio Malingin, Barangay Gunting, Barili, Cebu on Tuesday morning, July 5, 2022.

Staff Sergeant Erwin Alviso, investigating officer of Barili Police Station, identified the victim as Melchora Aligato Bayadog, of Sitio Malingin, Barangay Gunting.

The suspect was Joel Saplaag, a construction worker and resident of the same village.

Alviso told SunStar Cebu that the incident was reported to police around 5:15 a.m. Tuesday by Crisiolo Superales, a barangay councilor.

Police investigation revealed that the victim and the suspect had verbal altercation on July 1 after Bayadog planted a Napier grass near the suspect’s house.

Bayadog and Saplaag were both land caretakers.

Bayadog’s husband Crescencio, 72, said that around 4:50 a.m. of July 5, he was about to prepare for breakfast when he saw the suspect at the back of their house. The suspect then pulled off the window’s curtain and fired at Bayadog using a caliber .45.

The victim was hit in the back. She was brought to Barili District Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival by the attending physician.

Saplaag fled the area after shooting Bayadog.

Barili police have launched a pursuit operation against the suspect.

Alviso said the killing was planned.

"Planado gyud kay duol man kaayo ang pagtira, unya usa ra ka igo na diretso man gyud," he said. (GDC)
