A 17-YEAR-OLD senior high student was found dead and hanging in a mango tree in Purok 7, Barangay Zaragosa, Aloguinsan town, southwest Cebu on Tuesday morning, June 7, 2022.

Staff Sergeant Christian Elijay of Aloguinsan Police Station identified the victim as Wilbert (real name withheld), a grade 11 student.

Elijay said that Zaragosa village chief Ronald Rogero reported to their station at 8:10 a.m. after the victim was found dead at 6 a.m.

The Aloguinsan police personnel, together with the Emergency Medical Service team, responded to the area and thoroughly checked the victim's body with the presence of the village captain and immediate family of the victim.

Elijay told SunStar Cebu that around 8 p.m. of June 6, the victim asked permission from his elder sister to go to his aunt's house.

He again texted his sister that he was going home already, but instead of entering the house, he went to the hammock under the mango tree and slept there.

Around 6 a.m. the following day, the victim was seen by his sister hanging by a nylon rope.

His elder sister and uncle tried to untie the rope to revive him but their efforts failed.

The victim was brought to the Rural Health Unit but was pronounced dead by attending physician.

Elijay said the victim might have been suffering from emotional stress, prompting him to kill himself.

"Amo gi-try ug check ang messages sa iyang cellphone para ma trace kun unsa gyud ang hinungdan ngano'ng nagpakamatay ni siya pero deleted na ang messages (We tried to check the messages in his cellphone to trace the reason behind the incident but these were deleted already)," the police investigator said.

The family still wants to find the answers as to why he took his own life. (GDC, TPT)
