Separate Ways: Famous bands that called it quits, their impact on pop culture

·2 min read

Throughout pop culture history, musical groups disbanding has been something that no generation, old and new, will ever be prepared for. From The Beatles’ breakup to One Direction’s indefinite hiatus, the different generations that these bands catered to reacted with utter disbelief and shock.

The world is left to wonder how their favorite group ended, and what the events were that led up to it. Disbandment often leaves a bad taste in everyone’s mouth, and that is largely due to how some of the world’s biggest bands ended on a sour note.

Take, for example, the members of the rock band Guns N’ Roses. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in 2012 in which Axl Rose, the band’s vocalist, declined and reasoned that the Hall “doesn’t appear to be somewhere I’m actually wanted or respected.”

The most famous breakup that also ended with a furl of insults, was that of The Beatles. John Lennon and Paul McCartney could no longer hide the brewing tension between them, which eventually led the latter to confirm his departure from the band during a self-promotional interview for his debut album, “McCartney.”

The undeniable effect that these famous breakups have on the world and on pop culture leaves a lasting impression on band breakups, a pattern that seems to emerge as one ends. Their collaborative work as musicians and performers will always be ingrained in the minds of those who love and admire their work, but the fruits of their labor often come with a high price.

When One Direction announced that they were taking a break, fans were dismayed but hopeful for their comeback. However, one of the band members, Liam Payne, expressed recently that he was relieved once they announced the band’s break because of how toxic everything was becoming. Zayn Malik was the first one to leave the band, and “Directioners” were quick to show their shock and denial about his sudden departure. One fan tweeted, “Zayn leaving the band literally ripped a part of my soul away from me.”

History has shown that disbandment almost never ends peacefully. However, their music will continue to resonate for generations to come but fans are left to bear the pain of their split. The world may mourn and wish for their return but perhaps it is best that these bands, perhaps for their sake, went on their own separate ways.
