All set for senior citizens cash aid distribution

THE Cebu City Government has readied P176.45 million for distribution to 88,227 senior citizens who are qualified to receive a P2,000 financial assistance for the months of September and October this year.

The distribution will be done Friday, October 28, 2022, birthday of Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama.

Vicente Esmeña, head of the Office of Senior Citizens Affairs (Osca), said the fund for this financial aid is sourced from the P1.3 billion supplemental budget that was approved by the City Council during its regular session on Wednesday, October 26.

Dr. Ester Concha, head of the Department of Social Welfare and Services (DSWS), said all personnel of the City Government have been mandated to help in the distribution on Friday.

The DSWS was assigned to handle the distribution in mountain barangays in the north and south districts of Cebu City, while 27 other departments of the City Government will handle the distribution in other villages.

The senior citizens were advised to go to their respective barangay hall and bring with them an identification card issued by Osca and a ballpen to be able to claim their cash assistance.

The City said authorization letters will no longer be honored.

The senior citizens cash aid was part of the SB 3, which was pushed by Councilor Noel Wenceslao, chairman of the committee on budget and finance.

The final deliberation of the SB 3 did not go smoothly on Wednesday, October 26, as opposition councilors questioned the alleged use of "shortcut" methods to pass the budget ordinance.

Councilor Nestor Archival raised the question of why the proposed ordinance was already in the third and final reading when he had not seen the ordinance being discussed in the first and second reading during the council's previous session.

But Wenceslao refuted Archival’s statement, saying the first and second readings had already been done last week.

The budget, though, was approved on third and final reading with no objections. (PAC/LMY)
