On Wednesday, the 35-year-old mother-of-two spoke about her struggles with prepartum depression on episode 10 of the popular podcast PODCRUSHED, hosted by Penn Badgely, Nava Kavelin and Sophie Ansari.
In the 30 second clip, the "Pretty Little Liars" actress revealed that during her first pregnancy (with daughter Atlas, who was born in October 2019), she faced difficult challenges early on that left her feeling afraid.
"You know, I actually have had a way better time this time [for her second pregnancy] than I did the first time. I had really severe prepartum last time, which I’d also never really heard about. I’d only heard about postpartum and it was really crazy. It was like OK, I know this happens at the end, but I’m feeling weird now and I hadn’t even given birth, so this is terrifying," she revealed.
The Mississauga, Ont.-native also explained that it's important to talk about these issues so expectant mothers can feel less alone with their maternal struggles.
"Again, I think that’s the thing that I find so important to talk about is that everyone’s experience is different. As much as you want it to be this amazing thing — and it can be, for some — but sometimes it’s not always amazing and that’s OK you know, and we all aren’t meant to be glowing giving birth," the Canadian actress said. "Sometimes you can walk in and just say put it in my back and that is me, so I also have to be that voice for people because I feel that’s equally as important."
Fans praised Mitchell for her vulnerability and shared their experiences with pre and postpartum depression in the comments.
"I think I still have it nine months postpartum. Started when I was seven months pregnant. I haven’t done anything for it but really think I should. Your experience is helping me see that it's OK!" shared another.
"Love this attitude, thank you so much," commented someone else.
