Sherilin Plastics start MCBL title-retention campaign with back-to-back victories

The reigning champions Sherilin Plastics got their title defense off to a flying start as they walloped the Bakersfield JAIS, 121-82, in the Metro Cebu Basketball League Season 6 last Friday at the City Sports Club Cebu basketball court.

The team of businessman and sportsman Richard Mercado was up by just 11 at halftime but blew the game wide open in the third with a remarkable 52-point explosion in the third canto that gave them a sizable 82-57 lead heading to the last period.

Six players scored in double-figures for Sherilin led by the 14 of former University of Southern Philippines Foundation ace James Ferraren. Albert Ardiente almost had a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Sam Melicor added 12.

John Velasco pitched in 11 while Bry Oliverio, Kirt Jalalon, and Zylle Cabellon chipped in 10 apiece.

Sherilin then kept their momentum going as they demolished Bakersfield JAIS, 102-73, on Saturday at the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club.

Sherilin imposed themselves early and already led by 20, 27-7, after the first period. They extended it to 59-25 at halftime and eventually led by as much as 44, 81-37, before cruising to the lopsided win.

Ferraren led Sherilin’s balanced attack with 18 points, while Jalalon, Kevin Labay, and Kim Trigue scored 10 markers each.

Meanwhile, the Sentra Plastics also prevailed over Ronald O’Shoppe, 86-78, in a tough and physical game. Ronald O’Shoppe held a slim 59-57 lead but Sentra took over in the fourth, scoring numerous transition baskets to pull away late in the game.

Lanky big man Daryl Guerrero led Sentra with 18 points and played stellar defense on Ronald O’ Shoppe’s Emmanuel Villamor, forcing the latter to commit an unsportsmanlike foul with just two minutes remaining. JZ Dizon fired in 16 markers as well.

In other games, Homesourced routed TayTing’s Pastries, 83-62, while Truck N’ Trail (TNT) demolished the Prayboys, 112-65. Veteran guard Baruk Ceniza led TNT’s attack with 17 points and six boards as six other players scored in twin-digits for the Dondon Aropo-owned squad.

Vanderbuilt Properties prevailed over Cebu Tourista Transport Services, 78-70, while Oninz General Merchandise nipped RMA, 73-68. Aquila Transport Services edged Eli HeartFund, 81-75, as King Osabel produced 21 points, five boards, and four assists.
