POLICE are looking at illegal drugs as a possible motive for the shooting of a couple in Sitio Sto. Niño Ibabao, Barangay Mambaling, Cebu City Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 9, 2022.

This was disclosed by Maj. Jonathan Bethooven Taneo, chief of the Mambaling Police Station, after they went to the scene of the crime.

Taneo said James Carlon, 31, and Mercy Grace Creus, 33, may have been suspected of being police informants amid the recent spate of arrests of drug suspects in the area.

However, he said they are looking at other motives.

It was learned that the couple lived in a house that police raided a few weeks ago.

According to neighbors, the father of the owner of the house had asked the couple to leave but they asked for a one-week extension.

"Posible pud na nga ang kadtong tag-iya sa balay ang nag sugo, pero dili pata maka ingon nga siya gyud kay wala paman nato madakpi ang suspek aron maka sulti siya kon kinsay nag sugo sa iyaha (It’s possible that the owner of the house had the couple killed, but we cannot say for sure since we don’t have the gunman in custody to tell us who gave him the order)," Taneo said.

Taneo said that based on the information they gathered, the gunman was a frequent visitor to the couple’s house, which meant the victims knew the suspect.

He said the couple had just finished lunch when the gunman entered their house and shot them.

Carlon was hit in the cheek, while Creus was hit in the right side of her body. They were rushed to the hospital.

Police recovered an empty shell from what appears to be a 9mm in the scene. (BBT)
