Sinulog celebration 2022 to go ahead

THE Sinulog celebration in January 2022 will push through despite the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic and the recent devastation caused by Typhoon Odette (Rai).

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said the festival would be held, but the city has yet to determine how the celebration will be conducted.

“Sinulog will continue. It’s just a matter of how it’s going to happen,” Rama said during a press conference Monday, Dec. 27, 2021.

The mayor said they are considering options for the festivities like conducting virtual or physical presentations.

Rama added that he will call for a meeting before the end of this year to discuss the activities for the Sinulog.

The festival is celebrated every third Sunday of January to give honor to the Child Jesus, who is the patron saint of Cebu and a symbol of Christianity in the country.

Asked about the possibility of electricity not yet being restored during the festival, Rama said Señor Sto. Niño would give the city the power and residents must claim it.

Before the onslaught of Typhoon Odette, Rama saw the increase in the number of individuals vaccinated against Covid-19 as a good sign to have the Sinulog celebrated in 2022.

Tribu Lumad Basakanon, the champion of the Free Interpretation Category during the Sinulog 2020 Grand Mardigras, will be performing in the 2022 Daegu Colorful Festival in South Korea.

According to former Sinulog Foundation Inc. executive director Ricky Ballesteros, the group made it to the top four contingents that will perform together with groups from Japan, Russia and Singapore.

The Sinulog, Cebu’s biggest festival, typically draws hundreds of thousands of visitors. But last year, the Sinulog was scaled down due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Street dancing was scrapped. Instead, a 10-hour virtual program showcased the performances of contingents in the last 40 years and performances from Filipino communities abroad.
