Ateneo playmaker SJ Belangel is set to make history as the first Filipino import to play in the Korean Basketball League as he has reportedly agreed to play for the Daegu Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS).

The development was first reported by Korean publication Naver Sports, which said that the only thing keeping Belangel’s employment with KOGAS official is the signed Uniform Player Contract from both the team and the 22-year old guard from Negros Occidental.

Belangel’s contract will see him play for KOGAS in the upcoming 2022-23 season. He will also have the option of extending it for another season. Another perk that Belangel will reportedly have is the option of bringing his family with him to Korea.

Belangel was a revelation for both Ateneo and the Gilas Pilipinas men’s national basketball team in the last couple of years. In his final season playing for the Blue Eagles, he averaged 9.9 points, 3.2 assists, and 2.6 rebounds.

He also made a buzzer-beating three-pointer that lifted the Gilas to a thrilling 81-78 victory over Korea in the 2022 Fiba Asia Qualifiers in Clark last year.
