WHEN Samantha Baringui-an graduated from senior high school on Friday, April 29, 2022, her first thought was to show her diploma to her parents.

Samantha had mixed emotions on that day because she was happy to graduate from high school, but she was also sad that her parents were not with her to celebrate her success.

Samantha’s parents, Barangay Balungag, San Fernando councilor Malou Baringui-an and her husband, Peter, were slain by four active and one inactive police officers posing as robbers inside their house on the eve of Valentine’s Day, Feb. 13, 2022.

After her graduation at the Notre Dame Academy in San Fernando town, Samantha, with her classmates, went to the St. John Abellana Memorial Park in Barangay North Poblacion and showed her diploma to her parents’ graves.

“Gamay na man lang unta ang kulang nga maka-graduate ko apan wala gyud makasaksi sila si Mama ug Papa mao nga ako gyud giadto aron maipakita naku nila akong diploma,” Samantha said.

(I was supposed to graduate within a few months but my mom and dad were not here to witness so I really went there to show them my diploma).

But even with her parents’ absence, Samantha has felt that they continue to watch over her. She vowed to continue their dream of her completing college and become a professional.

Samantha said she was able to avail herself of a scholarship program in one of the universities in Cebu City. She plans to take up Medical Technology. (TPT)
