BATANGAS, Philippines – The daughter of slain Mayor Antonio Halili of the municipality of Tanauan filed her certificate of candidacy on the opening day of filing on October 11.

Angeline Sweet Halili is running against Alfredo Corona, the father of incumbent Mayor Jhoanna Corona-Villamor, who succeeded Mayor Halili after his assassination.

Corora-Villamor, meanwhile, has decided to run as board member of Tanauan City.

The Halili patriarch, controversial for his “parade of drug suspects” in the streets of Tanauan, was shot dead by a still unidentified assailant during a flag raising ceremony in front of the Tanuan City municipal hall on July 2, 2018.

The incident was caught live on Facebook by employee, Gerry Yson Laresma.

His murder is the remaining case unsolved by authorities among the 18 cases of murder against local executives since the start of the Duterte administration. – Marje Pelayo
