Prepaid LTE is finally going to be available in the Philippines soon, as Smart Communications is set to launch the service on Friday, April 19.
LTE stands for long-term evolution and is the fastest mobile Internet service commercially available worldwide—yes, faster than 3G, in case you didn't know. Think of it as the current Superman of Connection Speeds, which should theoretically let you download albums in seconds and your favorite movies in minutes.
The Philippines got its first taste of LTE in August 2012, when Smart began offering its LTE Plan 3500, which came with a free dongle worth P8,000. Globe Telecom launched it in September 2012 and initially offered two variants: Globe Tattoo Black Plans 1799 and 2499. The two telcos have since added more packages and offered dongle and smartphone bundles.
Current download speeds in the country are set at up to 42Mbps "only," not the theoretical 100Mbps connection. This may be because the devices available here have a maximum information rate of 42Mbps.
Question now is, how much is Smart LTE Prepaid going to cost you? What are the packages that the telco is announcing on the 19th? Are the offers going to be almost the same as Smart's LTE bucket plans for its postpaid subscribers, to wit P50 for one day, P299 for a week, and P995 for one month?
Stay tuned for more updates.
