AT LEAST 30 families were told to evacuate by the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CCDRRMO) due to the risk of landslides and flash floods in two barangays on Wednesday, August 10, 2022.

CDRRMO head Raquel Arce told SunStar Cebu that 22 families were moved out from their houses in Barangay Budlaan after signs of soil erosion that might lead to landslides were seen by the residents.

Ten families were also evacuated in Barangay Buhisan as a preemptive measure against possible flash floods since they were situated along the riverbanks.

Arce said all affected families are being housed in their barangay evacuation center while being assisted by the city's Department of Social Welfare and Services.

According to Arce, the incessant rains the past few days have caused the soil to be saturated.

Residents in the area took the initiative to report to the CCDRRMO the cracks they have seen in their houses and on the ground, she added.

The CCDRRMO has also identified areas in Barangay Budlaan as disaster-prone zones, and Arce said that they will install markings to make the residents aware of the possible hazards.

She mentioned though that their team will confirm if the area where the residents live is part of the danger zone.

Arce assured that the residents can return to their houses once the weather improves and after the CCDRRMO will give the order that the ground is stable and safe. (IRT)
