It’s almost our first anniversary of the Covid-19 lockdown in Cebu. While as a community it seems like we’ve adapted relatively well, we also understand that there may be those feeling “stressed out” by events happening around us.
How can exercise help us cope with stress?
Exercise pumps up your brain’s feel good chemicals
When we exercise, our brain increases the production of neurotransmitters that help us feel better. We’ve experienced this when we go for a jog, a hike or any physical activity that gets us tired but satisfied.
Exercise is meditation with movement
When we start concentrating on our body’s movements, we start forgetting about the irritants and stressors that ruin our day. When you begin to get used to physical activity and exercise, this focus on a singular task will help you stay calm and clear-focused on the things you need to do.
Exercise improves your mood
Regular exercise can help you with improving self-confidence, deal with anxiety and gets you better sleep! All of these benefits help you with your stress levels and grants you more control over your life and emotions.
How can you get started? If you’re struggling with any medical condition, the best thing to do is to first ask for advice from your doctor on what activities you can do and can’t do. When you start, you want to first start slowly, and build up the volume and intensity of your exercise gradually. Through discipline and consistency, exercise and physical activity can become a habit. Find something you love doing. This can be running, jogging or any activity that challenges you. Make sure it’s something you enjoy doing too.
Feeling stressed? Sweat it out.
