FILIPINO NBA aspirant Kai Sotto will likely miss the third and final window of the 2021 Fiba Asia Cup qualifiers because of his obligations to his G-League team, the Ignite.
According to a report, the NBA’s developmental league is harboring plans to hold a bubble tournament in February with the Ignite squad being the 18th squad to give its go signal. Each team is expected to play a minimum of 12 games.
The 7-foot-2 prodigy has a key role in the Ignite squad, which also has NBA prospects Jalen Green and Jonathan Kuminga.
Should the plan push through, Sotto will be unavailable to play for the national team, which will play longtime rival South Korea twice in the qualifying games this February in Clark, Pampanga. They will also battle the vastly improved Indonesia, which is being coached by former national team coach Rajko Toroman.
The Gilas currently has a perfect 3-0 (win-loss) record in Group A.
A few weeks ago, Sotto announced that he would be playing for the national team but program director tempered expectations, saying that discussions with Sotto and the Ignite were still ongoing. (JNP)
