TWO Philippine Navy ships welcomed the arrival of Juan Sebastian Elcano, a Spanish Navy training ship, on Tuesday, March 16, 2021, at the Suluan Island in Guiuan, Eastern Samar.
The Philippine Navy BRP Alfredo Peckson PC372 skippered by Lieutenant Commander John Paul Acio PN was stationed to meet the arrival of the Spanish ship at Suluan Island.
The BRP Abraham Campo PC396 manned by Commanding Officer Commander Kenneth Rosalejos PN was assigned to escort the training ship from Samar on its way to Cebu.
For its part, the Cebu City Government held a coordination meeting with different government agencies on March 15, in preparation for the ship’s arrival to the city on March 20.

The presence of the Spanish ship commemorated the arrival of the Armada de Maluco, also known as the Magellan-Elcano expedition that completed the first circumnavigation of the world on March 16, 1521.
Its visit to Cebu is part of the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the birth of Christianity in the Philippines. (PR/With NRC)
