SRP on rice, agri products takes effect in Metro Manila

QUEZON CITY, Philippines – Department of Agriculture’s (DA) list of suggested retail prices (SRP) for rice and other agricultural products has taken effect Monday (June 25) in Metro Manila markets.

The administrative order was released Monday as announced by Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol on Friday (June 22).

Together with the DA, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the local government units will take charge of the monitoring on the proper implementation of the SRP.

“Iyong SRP ay ang benchmark mo. Puwede kang bumaba, hindi ka puwedeng tumaas ng more than 10%. Kasi kapag tumaas ka ng 10% over the prevailing SRP, you could be charged with profiteering. Ibig sabihin, nananamantala ka,” said Piñol in an ambush interview during Monday’s 120th-anniversary celebration of the agency.

He cited as an example price adjustment in rice which has an SRP of P39. This means that a retailer may only sell ordinary regular milled rice not cheaper than P39, but not higher than P42.90, given the 10% ceiling.

Secretary Piñol, meanwhile, vows to look into the concerns of market vendors regarding the newly released SRP. In an interview with UNTV News, garlic retailer Norma Santos was worried as she would lose a huge income given that the price of local garlic is now P300 per kilo as compared to the SRP of P120.

“Kung bibigyan nila kami ng ganoong presyo, tapos mahal ang bili namin, lugi kami,” said Santos.

Piñol assured, “We will check that because hindi naman ganoon kataas sa farm gate.”  – Rey Pelayo / Marje Pelayo
