THE St. Theresa’s College (STC) survived a gritty University of San Carlos (USC) to win the Girls 19 title of the 8th SunStar Football Cup at the Cebu City Sports Center.
STC, which ousted the visiting Tabilaran FC, 1-0, in the semifinals, beat USC on penalities to win the crown with Leah Birondo getting the MVP honors. Aside from the bragging rights, STC won five new footballs courtesy of Anjo’s World, while Birondo got P1,000 savings account courtesy of Sun Savings Bank.
STC topped Group 1 with a 3-1 record, beating Southwestern University, 1-0, Brign Academy, 2-0, USOL, 1-0. They also drew Ormoc Soccer Association, 0-0.
Meanwhile, Don Bosc Technical College (DBTC) A beat sister team DBTC C to win the youngest division Players.
DBTC A, which finished second in Group 1 on two wins, one draw and one loss, ousted Group 2 no. 1 Cebu International School (CIS), 3-2, to make the finals, where they beat DBTC C, 1-0.
John Lerin was named the MVP.
In the Players 9 division, the visiting University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Balamban stamped its class on a slew of age group powerhouse teams to win the title.
USJ-R Balamban, which topped group 2, ousted Giuseppe FC, 1-0, in the quarterfinals and ended Springdale’s run in the semis, 1-0. In the finals, USJ-R Balamban outclassed DBTC A, 3-1, to win the title.
The 8th SunStart Football Cup continues on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2019, with games in the Players 13, Boys 15 and 19 and Men’s Professional Divisions. ML
