PHILIPPINES – “Fashion should be fun,” fashion stylist Jerome Awasthi stresses, as he plucks a bright mint-coloured blazer off the rack.
In Yahoo Lifestyle SEA’s Big Boss Style series, editor-in-chief Reta Lee teams up with fashion stylist Jerome Awasthi, who’s styled personalities like Adrian Pang, Fiona Xie and Claire Jedrek, with a style challenge: exemplify Emery & Co. founder Veronica Chau’s individual style with a mix of covetable and comfortable staples.
Chau, who owns a creative agency, decided to launch a new nail stickers brand Emery & Co. during the lockdown with the aim to provide women with the ease of dressing up their nails with their wardrobe, no matter their busy schedule. Speaking to Yahoo, the active mum entrepreneur shares that her daily look consists of a simple blouse paired with jeans, and she avoids anything floral or flamboyant.
With that description in mind, Awasthi takes up the style challenge by nudging Chau out of her comfort zone and introducing bright colours and statement accessories. “I think, if I wear like that to see my client, they will get a shock,” Chau expresses her initial surprise over her first style transformation.
Having your own personal style doesn’t mean following the latest trends or copying a complicated style trick, but knowing what works for you and working with your wardrobe’s fundamentals.
Watch the video to take home key takeaways from Awasthi’s styling lessons: be bold and don’t be afraid to embrace something different.
Embracing colours
Own bright colours with a dash of confidence. When we embrace colour contrast without fear, it makes the whole look interesting. “Red is such a versatile colour. You can wear red for Christmas, or any other occasions like National Day and Chinese New Year,” Awasthi adds.
Statement accessories
The bigger the bags, the better! When you pair a statement bag with something simpler, it brings out the personality of the bag. “The crazier the bag, the better!” Awasthi says.
When it comes to jewellery, don’t be afraid to try edgy but feminine pieces.
Experiment with outer layers
By experimenting with different outer layers, you’ll be able to add additional dimensions to your look. Outerwear pieces bring new silhouettes and shapes that bring character to your whole look. Try a fitted blazer, a bright cardigan or oversized pieces.
