Sugbu League marks return of local bowling

CEBU’s bowling community gets a rolling start as the newly formed Sugbuanon Bowlers United Association (Sugbu) holds its first major tournament with the aim to bring back the glorious days of the sport.

Veteran and new-generation players, driven by their passion for bowling, decided to form a new association anchored on the goal to revive Cebu’s bowling scene which became stagnant since the onset of the pandemic in 2020.

The group holds a three-month-long tourney dubbed as Sugbu League, which kicked off Sunday, Oct. 30, 2022, at the SM Seaside City Bowling Center.

Eight teams composed of five players will compete for the title.

“We established Sugbu just this year. Our goal is to revive bowling and also promote youth development for the sport,” said Edgar “Egay” Alqueza, the chairman and president of Sugbu bowlers.

Part of the Sugbu board of directors is executive vice president Gefre Guy Buyco, secretary general Maurhic Padawan, vice president for tournament Heber Henderson Alqueza, vice president for youth development Clyde Eldron Lim, treasurer Rey Velarde and auditor Vivian Padawan.

One of the long-term goals for the group is to come up with a program that will help children with their training and bowling equipment.

For its inaugural tournament, Sugbu will shell out P30,000, P20,000 and P10,000 for the top three teams.

The Sugbu League is part of the group’s preparation for a bigger tournament in January next year in time for the Sinulog Festival.
