Sultan faces Butler for interim WBO belt

JONAS Sultan finally gets his second shot at a world title as he comes in as a last-minute replacement to face former world champion Paul Butler for the interim World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight strap at dawn Saturday, April 23, 2022 (PH time), at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England.

Sultan was at the right place at the right moment as he stepped in as a replacement for WBO bantamweight title holder Johnriel Casimero after the latter was barred by the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC). The BBBofC disqualified Casimero from fighting after breaking its rule of using a sauna to trim down in weight.

Sultan was supposed to fight in the undercard of the event that’s why he was also in Liverpool.

The 31-year-old Sultan made waves in the US boxing scene after impressive back-to-back wins on American soil in 2021. He knocked out Sharone Carter in seven rounds in Carson, California, and then outclassed promising unbeaten prospect Carlos Caraballo via unanimous decision in New York.

Following his win over Caraballo, Sultan surged into the bantamweight rankings in all four of the major world boxing organizations. He’s ranked No. 4 by the WBO, No. 6 by the World Boxing Association (WBA), No. 12 by the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and No. 18 by the World Boxing Council.

This was the 33-year-old Butler’s second canceled fight against Casimero. He was first scheduled to fight Casimero in Dubai last year but the fight was scrapped after the brash Filipino star suffered from gastritis.

Sultan challenged for a world title in 2018. He lost to then IBF super flyweight king Jerwin Ancajas by unanimous decision.

Butler is a former world champion that won the IBF bantamweight crown following a split decision win over Stuart Hall in England in 2014.

Butler, the No. 1 ranked bantamweight by the WBO, is on a seven-fight winning streak. He’s coming off a split decision victory over Willibaldo Garcia last year.

Sultan tipped the scales at 117.6 pounds, while Butler weighed in at 117.8 pounds.

Sultan is 18-5 with 11 knockouts, while Butler is 33-2 with 15 knockouts. (EKA)
